Peter Kayafas on Australian Radio: The Merry Cemetery
The Merry Cemetery in a small village in the northern Maramures region of Romania and is known for its brightly painted carved wooden crosses which contain an epitaph, sometimes humorous, about the person buried below.
Peter Kayafas is a New York-based photographer who has spent much time taking photos in Romania, including for his book The Merry Cemetery of Sapanta.
He describes the atmosphere and history of this brightly coloured cemetery to Suzanne Hill as part of Nightlife’s Resting Places series.
